Weight management contributes to good health now and as men age. Managing weight supports overall health, and obesity can lead to serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. A healthy lifestyle includes mindful calorie intake, adequate nutrition, and physical activity, while sleep, age, medications, medical conditions, genes, and environmental factors also influence weight. These factors all contribute to mens’ health, and understanding them provides a broader view of weight management.

    Track Calorie Intake

Calorie awareness provides useful information for mens’ health. Counting calories all the time is not necessary, but knowing daily calorie needs can help with weight management. Calorie needs depend on age, sex, height, weight, and physical activity level, and those calculations also provide recommended amounts of fruits, vegetables, protein, dairy, and grains for adequate nutrition. Writing down foods and beverages creates a record, while nutrition labels provide information about serving sizes and calories.

Food variety supports adequate nutrition. Eating a variety of healthy foods is better than eliminating one type of food, such as carbohydrates. Reducing food variety can exclude nutrients, and it can make an eating plan harder to maintain over time. A varied diet provides different types of foods, while the overall eating pattern supports adequate nutrition.

    Stay Physically Active

Physical activity contributes to overall health. Adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week; that amount can be divided into 30 minutes a day for five days. Brisk walking is one example of moderate-intensity activity, while 75 minutes of vigorous activity provides an alternative. Adults also need muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week, and they can combine moderate and vigorous activity to reach an equivalent amount. Weekly activity targets include:

    • 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week
    • At least two days of muscle-strengthening activities each week

Physical activity alone does not determine weight. People who are physically active can still gain weight if they consume more calories than they use, so calorie awareness and adequate nutrition remain part of a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity increases the number of calories the body uses for energy; combining activity with reduced calorie intake can support weight loss.

    Prioritize Adequate Sleep

Sleep also affects weight management. Getting enough sleep can help manage body weight; it works alongside physical activity and adequate nutrition. Sleep forms one part of a healthy lifestyle, while other factors such as age, medications, medical conditions, and genes also influence weight. A balanced approach addresses these factors together, and sleep remains one part of that approach.

    Recognize Other Factors

Age affects body composition over time. As people age, muscle gradually decreases while the proportion of body fat increases, and this shift slows metabolism and makes weight gain easier. Some people also become less physically active as they get older, which increases the risk of weight gain. Medications and medical conditions can affect weight as well, and drugs such as steroids and some antidepressants can cause weight gain.

Genes also influence weight. Specific single-gene disorders can directly cause obesity, while multiple genes can interact with environmental factors to affect health. Environmental conditions can make healthy eating or physical activity more difficult, and limited access to healthier foods or places to be active can contribute to these challenges. Certain chemicals in the environment may also affect weight, so weight management involves more than food and exercise alone.

Discuss Mens’ Health with a Specialist

Weight management involves several factors, and mens’ health can include concerns related to weight. A health care provider can help determine whether an illness or medication contributes to weight gain or makes weight loss difficult. Medical conditions, medications, and other factors affect weight differently, so identifying those factors can help clarify the situation. A health care provider can also help explain how these factors relate to an individual’s health. Make an appointment today!
