Common Exercises Suggested by Physical Therapists

Physical therapists are licensed healthcare professionals who treat movement problems, and you work with them to recover function after surgery, injury, or illness. They assess how you move, and they design programs based on your specific needs. As pain and injury affect people differently, each plan targets your unique goals. Here are some exercises that may help:

    Flexibility and Mobility Training

Tight muscles limit your range of motion. Your physical therapist recommends stretches, and these target joints that feel stiff or restricted. When you hold a stretch for the recommended time, the tissue slowly lengthens. Gentle mobility drills prepare your body for harder tasks later. You practice these movements at a slow, steady pace. These stretches address several areas of the body:

    • Hamstrings and calves
    • Hip flexors and glutes
    • Shoulders and upper back
    • Neck and spine

    Muscle Retraining

After an injury, muscles sometimes forget how to fire correctly. Muscle retraining aims to wake up those weak or dormant fibers. Your therapist guides small, precise movements, and these are performed to rebuild the connection between your brain and muscles. Simple contractions come before complex patterns.

Isolation exercises help to start the process. You might squeeze one muscle group while keeping the rest still, and your therapist checks that the right muscle activates. Since faulty patterns cause strain, correct activation comes first. Small gains here support bigger movements later.

    Balance and Gait Training

Balance problems raise your risk of falling. Your therapist tests how you stand and shift your weight, and they design drills to match your ability level. When you strengthen the muscles that stabilize you, your posture steadies. Gait training focuses on how you walk. Balance and gait exercises may include the following:

    • Standing on one leg
    • Performing heel-to-toe walking
    • Stepping over small obstacles
    • Walking on uneven surfaces

You perform these near a support surface for safety. Your therapist stays close, and they cue you when your form drifts. Since balance builds gradually, you progress from easy to harder tasks over several sessions.

    Strengthening Training

Weak muscles struggle to support your joints. Strengthening exercises build the force your body needs for daily activity. Your therapist selects resistance that fits your current level, and they raise it as you adapt. Resistance bands, light weights, or your own body weight provide that load.

You repeat each movement in controlled sets. When you follow the prescribed count, you avoid overloading healing tissue, and your therapist tracks your progress. Squats, bridges, and rows appear in many programs. As muscles adapt slowly, steady practice matters more than heavy effort.

Rest days form part of the plan too. Your therapist spaces sessions so tissue recovers, and they explain how often to train at home. When soreness lingers longer than expected, you tell them right away. Adjustments keep the program matched to your body. Doing them without guidance sometimes leads to strain, and improper form slows recovery.

    Schedule a Physical Therapist Visit

A trained professional tailors these exercises to your condition. When you meet with a physical therapist, they assess your movement and build a plan around it. Book an appointment with a licensed physical therapist near you today. They will evaluate your needs and they will guide each step of your program.
